Governer Greg Abbott
The Rio Grande Valley Humane Society, formally known as the Humane Society of Harlingen, was honored to receive this special message from Governor Greg Abbott, and the first dog of Texas, Pancake. In October 2021, thanks to years of advocacy by Senator Eddie Lucio Jr., Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed the Safe Outdoor Dogs Act into law. The bill, championed by Senator Lucio, represents a new era for companion animals throughout the Great State of Texas.
Thanks to Senator Eddie Lucio Jr., and Governor Greg Abbott, Texas is making incredible progress in animal welfare, and in the Rio Grande Valley, the RGV Humane Society is leading the way. In the last two years, our work has saved the lives of over 10,000 homeless pets and has served over 15,000 additional pets through our low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination services.
ā
The RGV Humane Society is the Rio Grande Valley’s ONLY no-kill animal shelter, and it is our mission to make the entire region a safer place for pets. We hope you will join our mission as an adopter, foster, volunteer, or donor today.

All pets are vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed/neutered (or scheduled for spay/neuter) prior to adoption.
