Nakoma's Story
A Warrior's Journey to Hope
Hello, my name is Nakoma.
I was once a momma dog on a mission—a warrior protecting my two precious babies. We lived out in the middle of a field in Harlingen, Texas, where survival was our daily battle. Every day was a challenge, but I was determined to keep my little family safe.

One day, a human man appeared. At first, I didn't trust him—how could I? My babies were my world, and no one was going to come near them without proving they were safe. I growled and made sure he knew I meant business. To my surprise, he didn’t get scared or angry. Instead, he left us food and water and walked away. Then, he came back. And again. Day after day, food and water arrived. My little ones wagged their tails with joy, and eventually, I decided to take a chance.

I let the man touch my head, and the gentleness of his hand told me everything I needed to know—he was kind, and he wanted to help. Soon, he brought other humans who gave us a little house to shelter us from the cold. I started to believe that maybe, just maybe, things could get better.

Then came the day I met a human lady who took my babies and me into her car. We were separated and I was taken on a long ride to a place where they said I’d be “spayed.” I didn’t understand what that meant, but when we got there, I started feeling sleepy. When I woke up, I knew something had changed. I felt strange, but my thoughts were all about my babies—where were they?

I managed to escape and ran back to the field where we’d lived, hoping to find my little ones waiting for me. They weren’t there. I felt a pang of worry until I saw the kind man again. He called me “Momma” as he whistled for me. I couldn’t help but run to him. This time, he brought me somewhere new—a beautiful place filled with green grass, swaying palm trees, and the nicest humans I’d ever met. They fed me, walked me, and showed me love I hadn’t known before.

I may not ever see my babies again, but I feel in my heart that they are safe and loved, just like I am now. The humans here at the Rio Grande Valley Humane Society gave me a name that means “Warrior,” because that’s who I am—a warrior who fought for her family and found hope in the kindness of others.

I enjoyed all the love and care these wonderful humans at RGVHS had to offer. Because of them, I found my forever home in Pennsylvania. Where I live a life of luxury with my new family. I'm forever grateful for the team in Harlingen.
