Director of Development ​

Job Summary:

 

The Director of Development will plan and implement a development and fundraising strategy to provide for the short and long-term needs of the Rio Grande Valley Humane Society.

 

Big Picture:

 

The Rio Grande Valley Humane Society (RGVHS) is the only no-kill animal shelter system in the Rio Grande Valley, with locations in Mission and Harlingen. It is the mission of RGVHS to make the entire Rio Grande Valley a safer place for pets. The Director of Development will work with the Executive Director and Director of Operations to maintain and grow our no-kill community. Every animal and every minute counts in this line of work, and an extreme sense of urgency is a job requirement.

 

Duties/Responsibilities:

 

  • Works under the supervision of the Executive Director.

  • Sets annual monetary goals and budgets according to short- and long-term goals.

  • Establishes fundraising objectives for the organization, setting 6 month, 1 year, 3 year, and longer-term goals.

  • Maintains a list of potential financial donors including corporations, foundations, and individuals.

  • Produces relevant and informative fundraising literature for distribution to previous donors and the public.

  • Researches potential sources of, and applies for, grants and public funding.

  • Oversees the fundraising process and maintains records of receipts and disbursements of funds.

  • Plans fundraising events that effectively communicate the purposes of the organization.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:​​

  • Extensive knowledge of fundraising strategies and principles.

  • Excellent management and supervisory skills.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.

  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred.

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, or similar field preferred.

  • 3+ years of experience in fundraising highly preferred.

 

Other Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.

  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

  • Must hold and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License.

  • Must be willing and able to travel Valley-wide.

  • Must be willing and able to travel to industry conferences and trainings.
